Word Count and Page Estimates

Understanding Book Length Before Production

Word count provides a useful early estimate of a book’s printed length. However, the final page count can only be confirmed after professional interior formatting is complete.

Why Page Counts Vary?

Two manuscripts with the same word count may produce different page counts. The final length depends on:

• Trim size
• Font family and font size
• Line and paragraph spacing
• Page margins
• Chapter openings and section breaks
• Number of headings and subheadings
• Photographs, illustrations, tables and charts
• Front matter and back matter
• Footnotes, endnotes and references
• Whether the interior is designed for adults or children

Standard 6 × 9-Inch Book Estimates

For a primarily text-based 6 × 9-inch book, one professionally formatted page commonly contains approximately 225–275 words.

The following estimates refer mainly to the manuscript’s text pages:

10,000 words: approximately 36–45 pages
20,000 words: approximately 73–89 pages
30,000 words: approximately 109–134 pages
40,000 words: approximately 145–178 pages
50,000 words: approximately 182–223 pages
60,000 words: approximately 218–267 pages
70,000 words: approximately 255–312 pages
80,000 words: approximately 291–356 pages
90,000 words: approximately 327–400 pages
100,000 words: approximately 364–445 pages

The completed book will normally contain additional pages for the title page, copyright page, dedication, table of contents, acknowledgements, author biography and other front or back matter.

Typical Word Counts by Book Type

Short inspirational book or booklet: 10,000–25,000 words
Devotional or personal-development book: 20,000–50,000 words
Memoir or autobiography: 40,000–90,000 words
General nonfiction: 40,000–80,000 words
Academic or theological book: 50,000–100,000 words or more
Novel: 60,000–100,000 words
Poetry collection: varies according to poem length and page design
Children’s picture book: commonly fewer than 1,500 words, with illustrations determining most of the page count
Middle-grade book: approximately 20,000–50,000 words
Young-adult book: approximately 50,000–90,000 words

These are general publishing ranges, not acceptance requirements. The appropriate length depends on the book’s subject, audience and purpose.

Illustrated and Special-Format Books

Word-count formulas are less reliable for:

• Children’s picture books
• Poetry collections
• Workbooks and journals
• Cookbooks
• Photography books
• Books containing many tables or charts
• Academic books with extensive footnotes
• Large-print editions
• Full-colour publications

These books require an individual layout assessment because visual elements and intentional blank space determine much of the final page count.

Paperback Printing Considerations

A higher page count generally increases printing costs and may affect:

• The book’s retail price
• Spine width
• Cover dimensions
• Shipping weight
• Paper and binding options
• Profit and royalty calculations

Reducing a book’s page count should never make it uncomfortable to read. Huggins Publishers balances readability, professional presentation and production cost when designing each publication.

How to Find Your Word Count

In Microsoft Word:

Open the manuscript.

Select Review.

Select Word Count.

Record the total number of words.

The total may include footnotes, endnotes and text boxes depending on the selected settings. Tell us whether these elements are included when submitting your estimate.

Estimating Spine Width

Spine width is not calculated from word count alone. It depends on the final formatted page count, paper type and printer specifications.

The cover should therefore be finalized only after:

• Interior formatting is complete
• The final page count is confirmed
• The selected printer or print-on-demand platform provides its specifications
• The correct cover template has been generated

Do not create a final full-wrap cover using an estimated spine measurement.

Estimates Are Not Final Specifications

The figures on this page are planning estimates only. Editing can increase or decrease the manuscript’s word count, and interior design can significantly change the final number of pages.

Huggins Publishers confirms the production page count after the edited manuscript has been professionally formatted and reviewed.

Need a Project Estimate?

When submitting your manuscript, include its total word count, intended trim size and details of any images, tables, notes or special formatting. We can then provide a more accurate assessment of the project’s likely length and production requirements.
