6 X 9 Manuscript Specifications

Professional Specifications for a Standard 6 × 9-Inch Book

The 6 × 9-inch trim size is widely used for memoirs, biographies, inspirational books, academic works, theology, leadership books, general nonfiction and many novels. It offers a professional appearance while remaining comfortable to hold and read.

What Trim Size Means

Trim size is the final width and height of the book after printing and cutting.

For a standard 6 × 9-inch book:

• Final width: 6 inches
• Final height: 9 inches
• Metric equivalent: approximately 152 × 229 millimetres

The trim size applies to each individual interior page. It does not represent the dimensions of the full cover.

Submitting an Editable Manuscript

Authors submitting a manuscript for editing and professional formatting do not need to create a print-ready 6 × 9-inch file.

Submit the manuscript as a Microsoft Word document using:

• A readable 11- or 12-point font
• Double or 1.5-line spacing
• Standard document margins
• Clearly labelled chapters and headings
• Page breaks between chapters
• Consistent paragraph formatting
• Clearly marked positions for images, tables and other elements

Huggins Publishers will apply the correct trim size, margins, typography, page numbering and print specifications during interior design when these services are included in the publishing agreement.

Print-Ready Interior Page Size

For a book without interior bleed, each finished PDF page should normally measure:

• 6 inches wide
• 9 inches high

For an interior requiring bleed, the production file is commonly extended by 0.125 inch beyond the outside, top and bottom trim edges. A typical full-bleed interior page may therefore measure approximately:

• 6.125 inches wide
• 9.25 inches high

The exact file dimensions and bleed placement must follow the requirements of the selected printer or print-on-demand platform.

When Bleed Is Required

Bleed is required when an image, illustration, coloured background or other design element is intended to reach the edge of a printed page.

Bleed is generally not required for a text-only book with normal white margins.

Any element intended to bleed should extend approximately 0.125 inch beyond the trim edge. Important text and essential parts of images must remain inside the safe area.

Margins and Gutter

Every book requires adequate space around the text. The inside margin beside the binding is called the gutter.

Margin requirements depend on:

• Final page count
• Binding method
• Paper type
• Font size
• Presence or absence of bleed
• Printer or platform specifications

Longer books generally require a wider gutter. Huggins Publishers determines the appropriate margins after the final page count and production method are confirmed.

Do not place text, page numbers or essential images too close to the trim edge or binding.

Typography and Readability

A professional 6 × 9-inch book commonly uses:

• Body text approximately 10–12 points
• Comfortable and consistent line spacing
• A readable serif or suitable nonfiction typeface
• Consistent chapter and subheading styles
• Controlled paragraph spacing and indentation
• Proper widow, orphan and hyphenation settings

The exact typography will be selected according to the book’s genre, audience and content. Large-print books and children’s books require different specifications.

Page Numbers and Running Heads

Page numbers should be positioned consistently and remain within the safe area.

Some front-matter pages may display no page number even though they are included in the book’s page sequence. Running heads may include the book title, chapter title or author name, but they are normally omitted from chapter-opening and other special pages.

Images and Graphics

For professional print quality:

• Use original, high-resolution image files
• Aim for approximately 300 pixels per inch at the final printed size
• Avoid screenshots and images copied from websites or social media
• Submit images separately whenever possible
• Clearly identify where each image belongs
• Include captions and credits
• Obtain all required publication permissions

Images should not be enlarged beyond a size that maintains acceptable print quality.

Colour and Black-and-White Interiors

A black-and-white interior is normally most economical for text-based books. A colour interior may be appropriate for children’s books, photography, artwork, charts or other material where colour is essential.

Colour printing generally costs more and may affect the book’s retail price and royalty calculations. The appropriate colour profile and export settings will depend on the selected printer.

Final Interior PDF

A print-ready interior PDF should normally:

• Contain individual pages rather than two-page spreads
• Use the correct 6 × 9-inch trim dimensions
• Include bleed only where required
• Embed all fonts
• Display images at suitable resolution
• Keep important content inside the safe margins
• Contain no comments, editing marks or hidden text
• Contain no password or security restrictions
• Use the correct page order
• Meet the printer’s minimum and maximum page requirements
• Have a final page count acceptable to the selected binding process

Crop marks should not be added unless the printer specifically requests them.

Page Count and Blank Pages

Printed books are assembled in page sequences, and some production systems may require an even final page count. Intentional blank pages may therefore be added where appropriate.

Blank pages should be included deliberately during professional layout and should not contain accidental headers, page numbers or hidden objects.

Cover Dimensions

A 6 × 9-inch book does not use a 12 × 9-inch cover file. The full cover must include:

• Back cover
• Spine
• Front cover
• Required bleed around the outer edges

The spine width depends on the final interior page count, paper type and printer specifications. Therefore, the cover should be finalized only after the interior file and page count are approved.

Each printer or print-on-demand platform may generate a project-specific cover template. That template should be used for the final cover design.

Before Exporting the Final File

Confirm that:

• Editing and proofreading are complete
• All author corrections have been applied
• The table of contents matches the final pages
• Page numbers are correct
• Images are clear and correctly positioned
• Fonts are embedded
• Bleed and safe margins are correct
• No text is overset or missing
• The author has approved the final proof
• The file meets the selected printer’s current requirements

Production Specifications Take Priority

These guidelines provide a professional starting point. Final technical requirements may vary by printer, paper, binding type and distribution platform.

Huggins Publishers confirms the applicable production specifications before releasing a book for printing.
