Cover Design

A Professional Cover That Represents Your Book
A book cover is both a creative introduction and a practical sales tool. Huggins Publishers develops covers that communicate the book’s subject, tone and intended audience while meeting the technical requirements of the selected printing and distribution platform.
Cover design is completed in consultation with the author and proceeds to publication only after written approval.

What Cover Design Includes
Depending on the agreed publishing package, cover design may include:
• Review of the book’s subject, genre and audience
• Development of an appropriate visual direction
• Front-cover design
• Spine design
• Back-cover design
• Title, subtitle and author-name placement
• Publisher logo placement
• Back-cover description placement
• Author photograph and biography placement, when appropriate
• ISBN and barcode area preparation
• Printer-template setup
• Bleed, trim and safe-area preparation
• Print-ready PDF cover production
• Digital cover image for online listings

The Cover Design Brief
Before design begins, the author may be asked to provide:
• The final title and subtitle
• The author’s preferred published name
• A short book description
• The intended audience
• The book’s genre or category
• Comparable titles or visual references
• Preferred colours or themes
• Images the author wishes to consider
• An author photograph and short biography
• Endorsements approved for use
• Any required organizational or series branding
The design brief guides the process but does not guarantee that every requested element will be included. The final design must remain clear, balanced and suitable for professional publication.

Front Cover
The front cover normally presents:
• Book title
• Subtitle, where applicable
• Author name
• Primary image or design concept
• Series information, where applicable
• Selected endorsement or award information, when approved
The title and author name should remain readable when the cover is displayed as a small online thumbnail.

Spine
The spine width cannot be finalized until the interior file, page count, paper type and binding specifications are confirmed.
Where sufficient space is available, the spine may include:
• Book title
• Author name
• Publisher name or logo
Very short books may have a spine that is too narrow for readable text.

Back Cover
The back cover may include:
• A concise book description
• Author biography
• Author photograph
• Endorsements
• Publisher information
• Website address
• ISBN and barcode
• Retail or distribution information required by the platform
The back-cover description should be persuasive, accurate and easy to read.

Full-Wrap Cover Dimensions
A paperback cover is normally created as one continuous file containing:
• Back cover
• Spine
• Front cover
• Bleed around the outside edges
The exact width depends on the final spine measurement. Because spine width changes with page count and paper type, the final cover template is obtained only after the interior specifications have been confirmed.
Authors should not rely on a generic cover size for final production.

Images and Artwork
All photographs, illustrations, fonts, textures and other design elements must be legally available for commercial use.
Authors who provide their own images must confirm that:
• They own the material or have written permission to use it
• The image is suitable for commercial publication
• The resolution is sufficient for the intended printed size
• Any identifiable individuals have provided necessary consent
• No trademark, copyright or privacy rights are being violated
Huggins Publishers may decline to use an image that appears technically unsuitable or legally uncertain.

ISBN and Barcode
The ISBN identifies a specific book format and edition. Where applicable, the barcode is placed on the back cover according to the requirements of the selected publishing platform.
A different ISBN may be required for each format, such as paperback, hardcover or eBook. The ISBN and barcode details must be confirmed before the final cover is approved.
Colour and Printed Appearance
Colours displayed on a computer or phone screen may differ from printed colours. This can result from differences in:
• Screen brightness and calibration
• RGB and print colour systems
• Paper colour and finish
• Printing equipment
• Lamination or cover coating
Reasonable variations between the digital preview and printed copy are normal.
Author Review and Revisions
The author receives a cover proof for review. The included revision process is stated in the written publishing offer.

The author should verify:
• Title and subtitle
• Author name and credentials
• Spelling and punctuation
• Back-cover description
• Biography and endorsements
• ISBN information
• Image placement
• Publisher information
Written approval is required before publication.

Changes After Final Approval
Changes requested after the final cover has been approved may require a revised template, especially when the interior page count changes. This can affect the spine width and placement of all cover elements.
Authors should therefore approve the final interior before authorizing the final cover file.
Technical Preparation for Lulu
For books published through Lulu, the cover is prepared using the template generated for the final trim size, page count, paper type and binding selection.

The completed file is reviewed for:
• Correct full-cover dimensions
• Spine width
• Bleed and trim areas
• Safe placement of text and images
• Image resolution
• Embedded fonts
• Barcode placement
• Print-ready PDF export
Lulu may identify additional issues during file review. Any required corrections are completed before final publication approval.

Present Your Book with Confidence
A well-designed cover should invite the right reader while representing the author’s work honestly and professionally. Submit your manuscript for assessment to begin the publishing process.
