Editing and Proofreading

Professional Editorial Care for Every Manuscript
Strong ideas deserve clear, accurate and engaging presentation. Huggins Publishers provides professional editorial support to strengthen a manuscript while preserving the author’s message, voice and intended meaning.
The exact editorial service required is determined through manuscript assessment and confirmed in the written publishing offer.

Our Editorial Approach
Editing is a collaborative process. We do not attempt to replace the author’s voice or rewrite the book into a different work. Our role is to improve clarity, consistency, readability and professional presentation.
Authors retain responsibility for reviewing editorial recommendations and approving the final manuscript.

Manuscript Assessment
Before editorial work begins, we assess the manuscript to identify its condition and production requirements. The assessment may consider:
• Completeness and organization
• Intended audience and purpose
• Structure and flow
• Language quality and consistency
• Referencing and citation requirements
• Permissions and potential legal concerns
• The level of editing required
• Readiness for interior design and publication
The assessment helps us recommend the appropriate publishing pathway and establish a realistic production schedule.

Structural and Developmental Guidance
Where included in the written scope, structural guidance may address:
• Chapter organization and sequence
• Repetition or missing information
• Argument development
• Narrative flow and pacing
• Transitions between sections
• Consistency of tone and audience
• Areas requiring clarification or expansion
Substantial rewriting or research is not undertaken unless specifically included in the signed agreement.

Copyediting
Copyediting improves the manuscript at sentence and paragraph level. It may address:
• Grammar, spelling and punctuation
• Sentence construction and clarity
• Word choice and unnecessary repetition
• Consistency of names, dates and terminology
• Capitalization, numbers and abbreviations
• Style and formatting consistency
• Citations, notes and references within the agreed scope
• Obvious factual inconsistencies for the author to verify
Copyediting does not transfer responsibility for factual accuracy from the author to the publisher.

Proofreading
Proofreading is the final editorial review performed after the manuscript has been edited and prepared for production. It focuses on remaining surface errors, including:
• Typographical mistakes
• Missing or repeated words
• Punctuation and spacing problems
• Inconsistent headings
• Page-number and running-header issues
• Formatting irregularities
• Obvious errors introduced during layout
Proofreading is not intended to replace full editing or major rewriting.

Author Review and Approval
The author receives the edited manuscript for review. The author may accept, reject or discuss suggested changes, subject to the standards required for professional publication.
The author must carefully verify:
• Names, dates and factual claims
• Quotations and source details
• Scripture references and citations
• Permissions for third-party material
• Technical, professional or academic information
• The spelling of personal and organizational names
Editorial work proceeds to final approval only after the author has reviewed the manuscript and resolved outstanding questions.

Academic and Faith-Based Manuscripts
Huggins Publishers welcomes academic, theological and faith-based works. Depending on the project and written scope, editorial attention may include:
• Logical development of arguments
• Consistency of terminology
• Scripture references
• Footnotes, endnotes and bibliographies
• Selected citation styles
• Respectful presentation of theological and cultural perspectives
Authors remain responsible for the accuracy of translations, interpretations, quotations, research findings and specialized claims.

What Editing Does Not Guarantee
Editing improves the professional quality of a manuscript, but it does not guarantee:
• Acceptance for publication
• Sales or commercial success
• Positive reviews
• Academic endorsement
• Freedom from every possible error
• Legal clearance of all content
Authors should obtain independent legal or specialist advice when a manuscript raises significant concerns involving defamation, privacy, confidential information, medical guidance, financial advice or copyright.

Editorial Costs
For accepted publishing projects, the agreed editorial work is included within the fixed written package price. Huggins Publishers does not add unexpected editorial charges for work already included in the signed scope.
Any work outside the agreed scope must be explained and approved in writing before it begins.
