First-Time Authors
Your First Book Deserves a Clear and Supportive Path
Publishing a first book can feel overwhelming. Huggins Publishers provides accepted first-time authors with a guided pathway from manuscript assessment through editing, design, publication and launch preparation.
You do not need to understand every technical publishing requirement before approaching us. We explain each stage, identify what your manuscript needs and confirm the services, price and responsibilities in writing before work begins.
Who Is a First-Time Author?
For this pathway, a first-time author is someone who:
• Has not previously published a full-length book
• Is publishing with Huggins Publishers for the first time
• Needs structured guidance through the publishing process
• Has a completed or substantially completed manuscript
• Is prepared to participate in editing, review and approval
Previously self-published authors may also qualify when seeking their first professionally guided Huggins Publishers edition.
Begin with a Completed Manuscript
Authors should submit the most complete version of their manuscript available.
Before submission, please:
• Combine the manuscript into one editable document
• Include the title and author name
• Arrange chapters in the correct order
• Remove duplicate or abandoned material
• Check quotations, references and names
• Identify photographs, tables or illustrations
• Disclose previously published material
• Confirm ownership or permission for third-party content
• Keep a secure backup copy
Do not submit the only copy of your work.
Manuscript Assessment
Every prospective project begins with an assessment. We consider:
• Editorial condition
• Structure and organization
• Intended audience
• Subject and genre
• Approximate word count
• Required production services
• Copyright or permissions concerns
• Suitability for the Huggins Publishers catalogue
• Practical production schedule
Submission does not guarantee acceptance.
Written Publishing Offer
If the manuscript is accepted, the author receives a written publishing offer explaining:
• Recommended publishing pathway
• Included services
• Fixed package price
• Payment option
• Royalty arrangement
• Project responsibilities
• Estimated production stages
• Approval process
• Publication and distribution plan
• Important contractual terms
The author should review the offer and publishing agreement carefully before signing.
Professional Publishing Support
Depending on the accepted package, first-time authors may receive:
• Manuscript assessment
• Editing and proofreading
• Interior design and formatting
• Cover design
• Copyright-page preparation
• ISBN and metadata setup
• Lulu publishing setup
• Proof-review coordination
• Shopify book listing
• Print-on-demand connection
• Launch and marketing guidance
• Sales and royalty reporting
The exact services included are listed in the signed agreement.
Clear and Fixed Pricing
Huggins Publishers confirms the agreed publishing price before production begins.
Editorial work included in the signed package will not attract unexpected additional editorial charges. Any genuinely new work outside the agreed scope must be explained and approved in writing before it begins.
Major author-requested changes after approval may require a separate written arrangement.
Payment Options
Accepted first-time authors may be offered one or more payment pathways, depending on the manuscript and publishing agreement.
Available pathways may include:
• Payment of the agreed publishing fee before production
• An approved deferred-recovery arrangement under which the publisher recovers the agreed amount from initial Net Publishing Receipts
• A customized written payment schedule, where expressly approved
Deferred payment is not automatic and must be confirmed in the signed agreement.
Copyright Ownership
The author normally retains copyright ownership of their original work unless the publishing agreement expressly states otherwise.
The author grants Huggins Publishers the rights necessary to edit, produce, publish, market, sell and distribute the agreed edition.
The author must confirm that the manuscript does not unlawfully violate another person’s copyright, privacy or other rights.
Editorial Collaboration
Editing is a partnership between the author and publisher.
The author receives an opportunity to:
• Review editorial changes
• Answer queries
• Clarify intended meaning
• Correct factual information
• Approve the final edited manuscript
• Review the designed interior
• Review the final cover
• Approve the proof before publication
No book should proceed to publication without the required author approvals.
Author Responsibilities
First-time authors are expected to:
• Submit complete and accurate material
• Respond within agreed timelines
• Review proofs carefully
• Provide requested biography and photographs
• Obtain required permissions
• Approve final files in writing
• Participate in reasonable promotional activities
• Keep contact and payment information current
• Communicate questions promptly
Delayed responses may affect the publication schedule.
Understanding Royalties
The author’s royalty percentage and calculation method are stated in the publishing agreement.
Royalties are calculated from Net Publishing Receipts, not necessarily from the full customer purchase price. Net Publishing Receipts generally means the money actually received after applicable deductions such as:
• Printing and fulfilment costs
• Shipping subsidies paid by the publisher
• Payment-processing charges
• Platform fees
• Refunds and chargebacks
• Taxes collected or remitted
• Retail or distribution deductions
The applicable agreement provides the controlling definition.
Sales and Royalty Statements
Authors normally receive periodic sales and royalty statements according to their publishing agreement.
Statements may include:
• Reported copies sold
• Sales channel
• Gross amounts received
• Applicable deductions
• Net Publishing Receipts
• Author royalty
• Deferred-fee recovery, where applicable
• Amount payable
Reporting may be affected by the schedules of third-party retailers and distributors.
The First Book Fellowship
The Huggins First Book Fellowship is a selective opportunity intended to assist promising first-time authors.
It is separate from the general First-Time Author pathway. Not every first-time author will qualify, and fellowship consideration does not guarantee manuscript acceptance or publication.
The eligibility requirements and available support are explained on the First Book Fellowship page.
Preparing for Publication
After editing is complete, the book moves through:
• Interior formatting
• Cover design
• ISBN and metadata preparation
• File review
• Lulu project setup
• Digital proof review
• Physical proof review, where required
• Final author approval
• Shopify listing and Lulu Direct connection
• Launch preparation
Each stage must be completed before the next dependent stage can be finalized.
Your Role in Marketing
Huggins Publishers provides the marketing support identified in the accepted package, but the author remains an essential part of the book’s promotion.
First-time authors should be prepared to:
• Introduce the book to their communities
• Share the official purchase link
• Participate in interviews or launch events
• Connect with churches, schools or organizations
• Build an authentic reader audience
• Request honest reviews
• Continue promoting the book after launch
Publication does not guarantee sales, reviews, rankings or financial profit.
