Professional Pages Designed for Comfortable Reading
Interior design transforms an edited manuscript into a polished book. Huggins Publishers prepares book interiors that are clear, attractive, consistent and technically suitable for the selected printing or digital platform.
The final design is based on the book’s genre, length, audience, content and chosen production specifications.
What Interior Design Includes
Depending on the agreed publishing package, interior design may include:
• Selection and application of appropriate fonts
• Page size and trim setup
• Margins, gutters and bleed settings
• Paragraph indentation and spacing
• Line spacing and alignment
• Chapter-opening design
• Heading and subheading hierarchy
• Page numbers and running headers
• Front-matter and back-matter arrangement
• Table-of-contents formatting
• Placement of photographs, illustrations and tables
• Footnote, endnote and bibliography styling
• Print-ready PDF preparation
• Technical review before upload
Book Size and Trim Format
Many Huggins Publishers titles may use the standard 6 × 9 inch paperback format. Other trim sizes may be selected when appropriate for children’s books, workbooks, photographic books, academic publications or other specialized projects.
The confirmed trim size is stated in the project specifications before the final interior is prepared.
Margins and Gutters
Margins provide space between the text and the edges of the page. The gutter is the additional inner margin required near the binding so that text remains readable when the book is opened.
The correct gutter depends on:
• The final page count
• The selected binding
• The paper type
• The trim size
• The printer’s current specifications
A higher page count normally requires a wider gutter. Final dimensions are therefore confirmed after the manuscript has been edited and the approximate page count is known.
Typography and Readability
A professional interior should guide the reader without distracting from the author’s message. We consider:
• Font style and size
• Line length and spacing
• Paragraph structure
• Chapter and section hierarchy
• Contrast and visual balance
• Consistency throughout the book
• Accessibility for the intended audience
Decorative fonts are used carefully and are generally reserved for titles or special design elements rather than long sections of body text.
Front Matter
The front matter may include:
• Half-title page
• Title page
• Copyright page
• ISBN and publisher information
• Dedication
• Epigraph
• Foreword
• Preface
• Acknowledgements
• Table of contents
• Introduction
The exact order depends on the type of book and the material provided by the author.
Back Matter
The back matter may include:
• Appendices
• Endnotes
• Glossary
• Bibliography or references
• Index
• Discussion questions
• About the author
• Other books by the author
• Contact or publisher information
Photographs, Illustrations and Tables
Images must be clear, appropriately licensed and suitable for printing. Authors should provide the highest-quality original files available.
Images intended for professional printing should normally:
• Have sufficient resolution for their printed size
• Use an appropriate colour mode
• Include required bleed where applicable
• Avoid important details near trim edges
• Have written permission when owned by another person
Low-resolution or poorly prepared images may appear blurred or pixelated in print. Huggins Publishers will identify obvious concerns, but the author is responsible for supplying lawful and suitable source files.
Print and Digital Editions
A print interior and an eBook are different formats. A print book uses fixed pages, margins, gutters and page numbers. A reflowable eBook adapts to the reader’s screen and font preferences.
Where both formats are included, separate production files may be prepared according to the applicable platform requirements.
Author Review and Approval
The author receives an interior proof for review before publication. The author should carefully check:
• Chapter order and headings
• Page breaks and blank pages
• Page numbers and table of contents
• Photographs, captions and tables
• Footnotes, endnotes and references
• Names, quotations and factual details
• Overall readability and consistency
Written approval is required before the final file is uploaded for publication.
Changes After Layout
Extensive revisions after interior design has begun can affect page numbers, the table of contents, image placement and the final spine width.
Authors should therefore complete and approve editorial revisions before layout begins. Changes outside the approved scope will be discussed in writing before additional work proceeds.
Technical Preparation for Lulu
For books produced through Lulu, Huggins Publishers prepares the interior according to the selected Lulu product specifications. The final file is reviewed for trim size, margins, gutters, embedded fonts, image quality, pagination and other technical requirements before upload.
Lulu may still identify issues during its automated or manual review. Any required correction is addressed before final publication approval.
From Manuscript to Professionally Designed Book
A well-designed interior gives the author’s work the professional presentation it deserves. Submit your completed manuscript for assessment, and we will recommend the appropriate editorial and production pathway.
